Weight management

If you want to lose weight and maintain the results, you need to break the yo-yo dieting cycle. The science is clear that fad diets do not work and can lead to an unhealthy relationship with food or, in extreme cases, disordered eating. We also know from research that fad diets can cause future weight gain by slowing metabolism and affecting our appetite regulator hormones. To achieve long lasting results, Katie advocates healthy lifestyle changes that do not feel like a huge sacrifice. We want our clients to have more energy, feel better about their body and continue to enjoy the meals and snacks they love. Rather than another quick fix diet we want to increase your nutrition knowledge and equip you with the right tools to improve your health and wellbeing.

An individualised treatment plan is an available add on service that will be tailored to your energy needs and include easy access items as well as your favourite foods. Katie can make the meals family friendly to take the stress out of meal times.

In clinic, Katie also sees clients who have unintentionally lost weight and want help in gaining weight. She can provide education on how to gain weight in a healthy manner and if required is able to provide a script for nutrition support products.

Gut health

Maintaining a healthy gut is essential for overall health and well-being. The gut plays a crucial role in digestion, nutrient absorption, metabolism and immune function. Consuming a diet high in fibre with a wide array of different plants can help diversify your gut microbiome. Katie can equip you with the knowledge you need to improve the balance of bacteria in your gut and optimise gut health.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)

IBS is a very common gastrointestinal disorder that affects 1 in 7 people. With IBS you may experience diarrhoea, constipation, bloating, abdominal pain, flatulence and fatigue.

IBS should not be ‘self-diagnosed’. Instead, if you suspect you have IBS, see your doctor for a proper diagnosis. Getting a diagnosis of IBS is important to rule out other more serious conditions and disorders, such as coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease and endometriosis. There are many different nutrition strategies that can relieve IBS symptoms such as the low FODMAP diet, restriction of gastric irritants, modifying fat or fibre intake.

Katie has had ample experience providing nutrition education to improve IBS symptoms and related health issues. She will work with you to identify which foods and habits might be worsening symptoms and get you on the path to a healthier lifestyle.

Mental Health and Nutrition

We are learning more and more through research that good nutrition can support our mental health. Eating the right foods can improve out gut health which has been linked to improvements in mood.

Nutrition strategies Katie will use to support mental health conditions may include education around how to diversify our gut microbiome, managing gastrointestinal symptoms we may experience with stress (such as bloating, loose stools, nausea, reflux), tips on how to manage emotional eating and learning to get back in touch with your hunger and fullness cues. Her advice is individualised to the client’s nutritional needs.

Food Allergies

If you have a food allergy, Katie can teach you common foods that the allergen is found in, how to label read and importantly, how to ensure your are still meeting all your nutrient needs if you are on a restricted diet.

We want to create enjoyable diets within dietary restrictions so you still get pleasure from eating.

Chronic Disease Management

Katie is passionate about preventative nutritional medicine to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses. Science tells us that eating a healthy, balanced diet can slow down disease process and lower our chance of developing diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, certain cancers and more.

Heart Disease

If you are at risk of heart disease, Katie can discuss the nutrition recommendations around prevention of heart disease. This may include receiving cholesterol lowering advice, understanding the principles of the Mediterranean diet and discovering how food choices and weight can affect blood pressure.

Diabetes

Katie was the inpatient Endocrinology nutritionist at Fiona Stanley Hospital for several years and has significant clinical experience managing people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. She will be able to provide nutrition education around the right foods to improve glycaemic control.

Fatty Liver

Fatty liver, or hepatic steatosis, is a condition characterized by the accumulation of fat within the liver cells. In a healthy liver, a small amount of fat is normal. However, when fat makes up more than 5-10% of the liver's weight, it is considered fatty liver.

Lifestyle changes such as  nutrition, regular exercise, and weight loss, can help manage fatty liver. If you have fatty liver Katie can recommend specific foods and nutrients to help to reduce the severity or slow progression.

Osteoporosis

Throughout our life, bones undergo a continuous process of transformation involving breakdown and renewal. When resorption outpaces formation, it results in diminished bone density and strength, a condition known as osteoporosis, characterized by porous bones. This condition is prevalent among both men and women in Australia, and individuals with osteoporosis possess brittle and fragile bones, making them more susceptible to fractures.

If you have Osteoporosis, or its precursor, Osteopenia it is important to consume enough calcium, get enough vitamin D and partake weight resistance exercise. Katie can assess your calcium intake and provide education around the dietary sources of calcium.

Nutritional Approaches for Life Transitions

Your nutrition requirements vary over your lifetime. It is therefore important to adjust your diet to changing metabolic and health needs.

Katie will alter the nutrition recommendations to suit the needs of the client during their life stage.

Older teenagers and young adults

It is important late teens and young adults establish healthy eating habits that will be carried on into later life. Recommendations include physical activity, limiting alcohol intake, reducing unhealthy fats and salt and being careful to ensure adequate consumption of nutrients including iron and calcium.

Menopause

If you are currently going through menopause or suspect you are perimenopausal, Katie can help you navigate this new stage of life, offering practical support and advice around symptom management, weight concerns, meeting increased nutritional needs and moving your body.

Nutrition for older people

Healthy eating can play a crucial role in supporting overall well-being and mitigating the effects of aging. As we age you want to prioritize whole, nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

You may require more protein to build muscle mass, strength, and general health.

Aging may be associated with a decrease in metabolism, so adjusting portion sizes can help manage weight. In addition to healthy eating, physical activity, adequate sleep, and social engagement with family and friends are important components of a holistic approach to aging well.
